Screen Daily: Bristol Calling

Author:
Catagories: Interviews

Tom Hughes and Ophelia Lovibond give us the gossip from the set of Eight Minutes Idle.

It’s always nice to get a phone call at Screen HQ (everyone emails us these days), but even more so when it happens to be from the gorgeous Tom Hughes and Ophelia Lovibond, ringing to chat from the set of their romantic comedy Eight Minutes Idle which is shooting in Bristol.

Based on the award winning novel by Matt Thorne and directed by first time feature film-maker Mark Simon Hewis, Tom and Ophelia play Dan and Teri – for whom love blossoms in the Bristol call centre where they work.

The two young actors have an impressive body of work behind them both – Tom has already starred in Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll and Cemetery Junction, whilst Ophelia’s credits include Nowhere Boy and No Strings Attached.

And the word from the set is that the on-screen chemistry between the pair is electric.

So what’s their secret?

“We have been going for jogs together in the morning, doing yoga,” says Tom. “And doing mirroring exercises,” adds Ophelia.

They are clearly joking. So I put my theory to them – could it be because they are both Screen Stars of Tomorrow?

“Well I did say [to Ophelia] when I turned up, listen, I’m not going to work with you unless you’re a Screen Star of Tomorrow,” says Tom.

If only all actors were so discerning!

Starlet express: Meet the new wave of British screen queens

Author:
Catagories: Gallery, Photoshoots

Their faces may look familiar, but if you don’t know their names yet, don’t worry – you certainly will soon. YOU meets five talented young actresses destined to become tomorrow’s superstars…

Ophelia Lovibond

With an international film career well within her sights, Ophelia can currently be seen in No Strings Attached with Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher, having made her name in London Boulevard with Colin Farrell and Keira Knightley, and Nowhere Boy with Kristin Scott Thomas and Aaron Johnson.

You’ve worked with some big names but who has been your favourite co-star?
Anna Friel – as well as being completely stunning, I think she’s very natural and brings integrity to every role she plays. I was lucky enough to work with her on London Boulevard and she was just as talented as I’d always thought. She became a good friend, which is fantastic.

What was your plan B if you hadn’t made it as an actress?
Without wishing to sound too arrogant, I’ve always believed I’d make it and never really pictured myself doing anything else. I’ve always thought that if you want something enough and are willing to work for it, then you can make anything happen. From a young age – when I started working professionally on [Channel 4 family sitcom] The Wilsons – I knew that acting was for me.

What is your fashion weakness?
I love a bargain, so sifting through charity and vintage shops is my idea of heaven. But I also adore Miu Miu shoes. When I got my first film pay cheque I splurged on a pair of six-inch green suede Miu Miu platforms.

How do you spend your downtime?
I’ve always enjoyed the escapism of a good read. Recently a producer recommended Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut to me, which I loved, but one of my favourite books is Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin – there are so many beautiful, resonant lines in there.

So, what’s next for you?
I’m filming a comedy with Jim Carrey and Angela Lansbury called Mr Popper’s Penguins. I love doing comedy – it comes naturally to me as I’m a complete klutz in real life. Having a comedian as renowned as Jim Carrey laugh at your jokes, and particularly my whale impression, is a pretty big boost!

Ophelia Lovibond Ranked Among Most Desirable Women According to ‘Ask Men’

Author:
Catagories: Articles

Ophelia Lovibond is the up-and-coming British actress with an unforgettable name and beauty to match. While she recently lost out on playing the romantic lead in the Spider-Man reboot, Lovibond can be seen in the upcoming Jim Carrey flick, Mr. Popper’s Penguins. She’s been honored this year by Ask Men, which ranks her among the Most Desirable Women.

Writes the men’s magazine: “As though culled straight from a Dickens tale, Lovibond’s whimsical handle is only outdone by her ethereal face, wide-set eyes, arched cheekbones, bee-stung lips, and all that. The UK native was born to be a star, and since landing in Nylon magazine’s Young Hollywood Issue, she’s becoming just that.”

AskMen.com’s annual list of the Top 99 Women was published Tuesday, Feb. 1, and includes some of the hottest actresses, models and musicians working today. Blake Lively topped the 2011 list. She had a big 2010 with her hit show Gossip Girl and a critically-acclaimed performance in The Town.
